A massive Polish presence in Italy, particularly during the 16th and 17th century, is the fact often referred to when the roots of Polish humanist culture is under discussion. Indeed, Poland has been the only state in Central and Eastern Europe which absorbed on a larger scale the ideals of the Renaissance. In the 16th and 17th century, changes that took place in Polish culture contributed to the consolidation of the image of the Polish nobleman. Głębokie rozumienie istoty opozycji pomiędzy światem kultury, reprezentowanym przez miasto, oraz natury, związanej z życiem na wsi, uchwycone zostało na fresku Tycjana z 1511 roku, przedstawiającym cud Świętego Antoniego, a rozgrywającym się na styku tych dwóch przestrzeni.
